Comment from audience member
The program selection was exceptional for the heritage site, and the architectural space enhanced the concert experience. I hope to see more concerts being held in architectures of various styles.

The Musicus Heritage series encourages audiences to learn about the history and stories of Hong Kong’s heritage sites through concerts and related activities. The 2023 concerts, Ebb and Flow and Neoclassicism Refashioned, were both part of the second year of the Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories program funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. This video features excerpts from the concerts. In the accompanying interview, Musicus Society Artistic Director and cellist Trey Lee introduces the theme of “rejuvenation” and cross-disciplinary arts in the series, and explains the choice of music programs at these Grade II-listed buildings as concert venues.

The Baroque works inspired by Western maritime myths, which feature on the repertoire of Ebb and Flow, echo the history of Aberdeen as a fishing village. In addition, Call for Scores 2023 winner Kenneth Lee was commissioned, as Composer-in-Residence, to write Bobbylon Suite, an excellent new work, which includes the Chinese pipa in a Western string quartet.

In Neoclassicism Refashioned at the Former North Kowloon Magistracy, Trey Lee and local and overseas musicians have explored neoclassical aesthetics, performing works by composers such as Brahms in Court No. 1, which has retained its original decor. The building dates back to the 1960s and has inspired Musicus to enrich the music program by introducing the fashion history and evolution of the cheongsam popular in that era.
