Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories: Neoclassicism Refashioned

Music meets architecture and fashion in a stimulating concert experience

The Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories continues with an exciting series of concerts at the historic Former North Kowloon Magistracy. The concerts, led by Musicus Artistic Director and cellist Trey Lee, will feature both classical and 20th century neoclassical pieces, ranging from Haydn to Hindemith and Brahms to Richard Strauss. Also accompanying Trey will be German guest violinist Martin Funda and members from the Musicus Soloists Hong Kong.

Neoclassical music harks back to the music of the early modern period, rejuvenating the classical idiom, and getting concert music back to basics.

In line with previous editions of the Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories, the concerts will showcase the nexus of music, architectural heritage and Hong Kong’s cultural production, taking place in Court No. 1 of the historical building, which dates from 1960 and represents a stripped classicism architectural style. The guided tours, as part of the program, also highlight the revitalisation of Hong Kong’s buildings and the afterlife they enjoy after their original use has ended.

In partnership with the Hong Kong Cheongsam Association, the concerts will be accompanied by a special exhibition on the history and tailoring techniques of the iconic cheongsam. This will include two newly commissioned pieces, one female and one male, by up-and-coming fashion designers  Frona Yeung, Katrina Tsai and Quinn Cheung under the direction of the association’s Dr Haze Ng and Eunice Lee, as well as works by students from the School of Fashion and Textiles of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Hong Kong Design Institute.
