The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant Musicus Heritage Stories – Tastes and Timbres
04.17.2026(17 April 2026, Hong Kong) Musicus Society presents four heritage concerts titled Tastes and Timbres in Tai Kwun on 29–31 May. Artistic Director and cellist Trey Lee will guide Musicus Soloists Hong Kong (MSHK), the talented homegrown ensemble, in a program inspired by the storied locale of Tai Kwun and Central. They will be joined by two illustrious guest leaders: Finnish-Estonian violinist Anna-Liisa Bezrodny, guest concertmaster of the Estonian Sinfonietta, and South African violinist/violist Gareth Lubbe, former principal of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Featuring an engaging repertoire of Western masterworks, Chinese tunes and more, Tastes and Timbres is all about flowing music and aromas that evoke impressions and memories. This program is funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
Trey Lee says, “I am delighted to lead the dynamic MSHK in a program echoing the rich multicultural heritage and culinary history in Tai Kwun's neighborhood. Our program showcases the ensemble’s resonant timbres combined with its captivating virtuosity. We also welcome Anna-Liisa Bezrodny and Gareth Lubbe as guest leaders, and I can’t wait for these international virtuosos to work with our young players and students. Join us for these spectacular concerts full of musical flavors!”
Ensemble and chamber concerts illustrate contrasting timbres and cultural influences
In the ensemble concerts on 29 and 30 May, MSHK will accompany Trey Lee in Couperin’s lyrical Pièces en concert. What’s more, two chamber concerts on 31 May, featuring Trey Lee and friends, expand the repertoire with world music. Discover folk music from South Africa at these concerts, which also highlight improvisation and Lubbe’s ethereal, spellbinding overtone singing.
Cross-art form collaboration and extension programs
Tastes and Timbres is more than a traditional concert experience. It features a special collaboration with local artist Vanessa Choi, who has designed bespoke scents inspired by Hong Kong’s vibrant diversity and concert themes. Audiences can also explore Tai Kwun in guided tours after selected concerts and observe master classes taught by the guest overseas artists. Details are listed in the table below.

About Musicus Society and Musicus Heritage
Musicus Society was founded in 2010 to become an international music organization featuring quality performances and world-class homegrown artists. The Society’s mission is to promote cross-cultural collaboration of music internationally between top local and overseas artists through performances and by nurturing the next generation of talent.
Since 2013, Musicus Society has presented the Musicus Heritage community concert series at local historic sites in order to celebrate Hong Kong’s history through music. The series also provides opportunities for young Hong Kong musicians to elevate their artistry by collaborating with internationally renowned artists. This hugely popular series has received support from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust since 2019 and was recognized in the 2022 Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases, organized by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for Asia and the Pacific under the auspices of UNESCO. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: Musicus Heritage Stories is now a comprehensive yearly program, encompassing thematic concerts, open rehearsals, guided tours of heritage sites, master classes, school visits, and ambassador sharing sessions. By combining classical music with heritage stories and engaging the community through various educational projects, it encourages the public to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Hong Kong’s history and culture.
Musicus Society is a registered charity and financially supported by the Art Development Matching Grants Scheme of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
