The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: Musicus Heritage Stories – Resonance of Wartime

Resonance of Wartime invites you on a distinctive cultural journey in two beautifully restored heritage buildings in the Eastern District – an intimate encounter where chamber music converges with living history, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Acclaimed cellist and Artistic Director Trey Lee joins forces with violinist Jonian Ilias Kadesha and some of Hong Kong’s most gifted young musicians in a series of stirring performances. Set against the historic backdrop of the Grade 2-listed Woodside in Quarry Bay and the declared monument old Lei Yue Mun Barracks, the four concerts offer a profound connection to spaces where past and present intertwine.

The program features Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 3 – a gripping musical testament to the turmoil of war, composed in its devastating aftermath. The ensemble also revives two rarely performed gems by Komitas, the Ottoman-Armenian priest and ethnomusicologist, and Coleridge-Taylor, the celebrated British composer. Both drew deeply from the folk tradition to write strikingly original and evocative music. Each concert will showcase selected movements from the full-length works.

Enriching the experience, the heritage research collective Urban Studies Institute presents a curated exhibition and guided tour, unveiling layered stories of the Eastern District’s wartime legacy and its ongoing urban transformation. Step into these unique heritage architectures to discover the resonance between music and history.

With funding from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant, this program is presented by Musicus Society as part of the 2025-26 Eastern District Cultural Festival.
