Although situated at opposite sides of the world, late 19th century Hong Kong and New York saw an influx of immigrants and refugees who contribu ted greatly to making each city the cosmopolitan center it is today. While New York ‘s arriva ls primarily came from Europe, Hong Kong received those from China and the rest of the world, turning the two cities into major hubs of trade that continue to this day. Inevitably, the most vulnerable in these rapidly changing societies would be left behind to suffer the darker side of such inexorable development.

Living just north of the Lower East Side from 1892-5, Antonin Dvořák was most likely exposed to the underbelly of New York’s urban life with its waves of poor immigrants from all over the Old World. Meanwhile, in late 19th century Hong Kong, the kidnapping and trafficking of women and children were serious crimes plaguing the city.

Since its establishment in 1878, Po Leung Kuk has focused on preventing the abduction of women and children and their aftercare with its objective of "protecting the young and the innocent". Gradually over time, Po Leung Kuk has evolved into a major charitable organization providing a wide spectrum of quality services.

Kwan Ti Hall is situated in the main building of Po Leung Kuk Headquaters on Leighton Road where the Kuk has been using since 1932.
Musicus Fest
In the concert, Tapiola Sinfonietta Quartet performed Dvořák’s American Quartet, which was written during his time in that country. Many have said that this work evokes both the influences of his new surroundings in America as well as a longing for his home back in Europe – a sentiment likely shared by many of the immigrants he encountered. Other program included Cantonese and southern Chinese music that would have been heard in Hong Kong and the surrounding region during the same era.

Jeff Leung's "66 Leighton Road" made its world première within the Kwan Ti Hall that inspired it.
