Musicus Heritage Community Concert Series

From the legendary Finnish dance music band Dallapé, Juha Hostikka (band leader and vocalist) and Niko Kumpuvaara (accordionist) visited Hong Kong for the first time to bring us a rare treat – Finnish tango music. Tango emerged from Argentina around the 1900s, (the same era during which our concert venue Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, a Grade 1 historic building, was built) and developed into a unique style after it arrived in Finland. The night began with Argentine tango classics, followed by Finnish tango music, from traditional to new creative works. Our own music talent, harmonica player Patrick Yeung, a laureate of the Taiwan International Harmonica Elite Competition 2015, partnered with the Finnish musicians in works including one of Piazzolla’s best loved pieces, ‘Oblivion’.

The pre-concert heritage talk introduced the history of the venue. The building was formerly the Cassels Block of Old Victoria Barracks in Edwardian Classical Revival style.

This Musicus Heritage Community Concert has Credit Suisse back as Lead Partner, and is fully supported by the Consulate General of Finland, Hong Kong.

Pre-concert Heritage Talk

The Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre was converted from Cassels Block, built in the early 20th century as married quarters for officers, in Edwardian style. It is one of the few conserved military buildings in the Admiralty area. Through exploring the origin of the Cassels Block and its architectural style, this talk introduces the relationship between inception of the Admiralty Barracks and Hong Kong in the early colonial era to the late 19th century, reflecting on the lives of the British troops in early 20th century Hong Kong.
