Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mak Ka-yin graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree (Hon) and a Master’s degree from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Erhu and Gaohu performance in 2014 and 2016 respectively. His teachers included Zhang Chongxue and Professor Yu Qiwei. His excellent performances have brought him a number of scholarship awards including those offered by Exxon Mobile Ltd., the Hong Kong Bank Foundation (Hong Kong – Mainland Exchange Scholarship), as well as the Musicus Society Trey Lee Scholarship for his distinct performances from 2014 and 2016.
Mak is now a full-time musician in the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and is one of the core members of the local strings ensemble, Goin’ Music. He has appeared in concerts in Australia, Finland, China and Taiwan, and has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles such as the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra, YWCA Chinese Orchestra and Wang Kwong Chinese Orchestra.
