Winner of the Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld 1st International String Competition Chamber Music Division, the Gloucester String Quartet is one of the rising quartets in Asia. Their performances have been heard in venues such as the Royal Academy of Music in London, the West Dean College, the Wells Cathedral, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Hong Kong City Hall.
Graduate quartet in residence of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Gloucester String Quartet is currently under the tutelage of Ivan Chan (former leader of the Miami String Quartet), Prof. Michael Ma and Prof. Ray Wang. They have participated in masterclasses held by the Shanghai, Szymanowski, Penderecki, Chilingirian, Endellion, Miró, Debussy and Miami String Quartets.
Recent highlights include performances with members of the Miami String Quartet in the Helmut Sohmen and Peter Thompson International Artists Series in 2013; a concert with pianist Ido Akov from Jerusalem presented by the Consulate General of Israel in Hong Kong in 2014; Musicus Heritage Community Concert with pianist Colleen Lee at PMQ in 2015; a China tour to Chengdu and Shantou and a concert with guitarist Craig Ogden in Hong Kong in 2016.
The Gloucester String Quartet receives scholarship from VM Strings. Zheng’s 1706 Matteo Goffriller violin, Wei’s 1839 Giuseppe Baldantoni violin and Choi’s 1770 Lorenzo Storioni viola are on loan from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and Xu’s 1836 Simon Andrew Forster of London cello is on loan from the Society of the Academy for Performing Arts (SAPA).
