Children’s Concert : “Marco Polo Goes to Carnival”

Discover the fun world of Venetian masks in a fantasia of music, dance and drama

Age 5+

Musicus Fest celebrates its 5th anniversary with its first-ever original production – “Marco Polo Goes to Carnival”. In a magical confection of music and dance, local composer Willis Wong transforms his vision of the Carnival of Venice into a joyful evocative score. The production features ballet and “commedia dell’arte” improvised drama, performed by a magnificent cast of local and overseas musicians, young ballerinas and international actors from Italy, Taiwan and Hong Kong. In an artistic nod to Marco Polo’s journey to China, the colorful scenes are filled with joyful creative spirit of the Venetians in their opulent masks, while the uplifting melodies are rendered by both Western and Chinese musical instruments, as Marco Polo is believed to have brought Chinese instruments back to Venice from his travels.

The concert also features Stravinsky’s delightful “Suite Italienne”, derived from his luminous score for his ballet “Pulcinella”. The plot is based on an 18th-century manuscript of a “commedia dell’arte” play that Sergei Diaghilev discovered in Naples. With choreography by Joffrey Ballet’s Victoria Vargas, the ballerinas on stage bring the score to life in a vivacious mélange of poise and artistry.
